Sam – water water everywhere

Water is important to both of Sam’s sports – swimming and sailing. Sam loves what he does and thinks it’s very important for other people with disabilities or additional needs to find something they think they’ll enjoy and see where it takes them.

“I started sailing when I was eight as a hobby to do out of school. My parents wanted something for me to do. I have aspergers and dyspraxia and it’s definitely helped me improve my confidence. I started swimming when I was 12 – to help with my fitness and my joints. I found a good coach and entered national competitions. I’ve been a swim leader for three years and it’s very gratifying for me to help other people. I can remember what it’s like.”

Sam is currently studying politics, history and English literature as well as English language, media studies and maths. “I’m going to university in October to study politics and law and want to keep sailing and swimming. I want to keep enjoying what I’m doing and whatever happens along the way I’ll go for it.”

His top tips for others? “Find out what’s out there and try it. If you don’t like it don’t do it. Find something you think you’ll enjoy and who knows what will happen after that…”

Sam sails with the East Anglian Sailing Trust and they have short break activities on this site and visit www.e-a-s-t.org.uk to find out more about the sailing trust.
