Each year about 60 young people help out at Activities Unlimited events such as the Forest Festival. They have a full day’s training beforehand – covering things such as anti-bullying, disability awareness, listening skills, confidentiality and team building. Lynda Skelton, who helps recruit the volunteers explains: ‘The young volunteers love to help out. They get a chance to try the activities alongside the disabled children and young people – and they all learn from each other. Volunteers play an important part in our events and it wouldn’t be the same without them.’
Over 120 young people applied to volunteer last year and 60 were selected from schools across Suffolk. Priority is given to young carers and youngsters in care. As well as the Forest Festival, volunteers also help out at arts and other Activities Unlimited events. “I absolutely love it. It’s my third year volunteering and it’s great fun. It doesn’t feel like there’s any difference between the people here, apart from age.” Sarah, volunteer at Thorpe Woodlands and the Forest Festival
“This is my second time volunteering at an event and I’m loving it. It’s true what they say – you leave with so much more than you started with.” Ellie, an AU volunteer at Wicked!
“It’s nice knowing you’ve given someone else a really good experience and have shared things. The volunteers are always smiling and the kids have fun, get support and everything they need to have a laugh. Plus we get to have a go at everything too.” Nick, volunteer at Thorpe Woodlands
